What exactly is the benefit of a solo IK compared to a tandem?

Hey everyone,

I'm considering buying two tandem IKs, either Zoiks or Tomcats for
me and the family (wife, 8 yr old, and 4 yr old). But I'm playing
with the idea of a tandem and a solo (I'm sure
the 4 yr old and I would fit on a solo). Exactly how much more
menuverable is a solo? Don't seem to save much money,
give up 2 feet, 100 lbs of storage. I kinda doubt a Zoik can
be used like an Aire force and play on waves, so is it simply
tighter turns for technical rapids? My 8 yr old probably will
want to go solo sometime soon so would a solo really be much
easier than for him to go solo on a tandem?

Thanks for any advice

The company I work for rents out the tomcat tandem and solo IK's. In my opinion the tandems aren't nearly as fun and manuverable as the solo.

I own a Tomcat tandem and a Force. I cant notice any difference in manuverablity, both turn on a dime, both are very stable. If anything I think the Tomcat tracks better, it sits higher so you get less h2o in the boat, and it has more kick so it parts the waves better. When I bought the Tomcat I brought it along on Deso and turned my 10 year old daughter (51 lbs.) loose on it and she had no problems paddling it at all, and she paddled about 90% of the way. I think that the space you lose vs. the money you dont really save isnt worth the trade off, but in my opinion I would rather have the option of bringing another person allong. Let me just say I dont do all the extreme things that the Force is built for. I only run the duckies when the h2o drops or I need an easy shuttle. I would love to sell the Force and buy an other Tomcat. PM me if your interested, I'll cut a great deal!!
