Taper the shaft slightly around the ring hole with a fine file or sand paper until the die fits nice, flat and perpendicular to the shaft. Put downward pressure on the die and slowly turn while keeping the die flat. Turn until you feel it has a good strong bite before you relieve the chips by turning back a half turn. Then rinse and repeat. Brass is soft so it doesn't need much lube. Good luck!
This is what I wanted to confirm. From the photos above, it looks like the deluxe version already comes with the ring hole part shaved so that the nut can slide in. For the standard version, the shaft diameter is constant all the way to the bottom, so unless I file, taper the ring hole portion, there is no way to put the thread above it. I was going to start the thread right at the bottom, but, it'll be better to shave off some metal and start above the ring hole.
