spray skirts

hello all, i am new to this forum and whitewater kayaking in general. i have been kayaking since 1999, though i just recently took the plunge and got a used dagger centrifuge. i know its more of a playboat and that is totally fine with me. i bought it off of craigslist for $225 and it came with a paddle, spray skirt, and racks so i could put it on my car.

the problem i am having is my spray skirt feels abnormally hard to get on, and when i say abnormally hard i mean basically impossible. its a medium harmony lc-1 skirt on the dagger centrifuge boat. the person i bought it from was thinner than me but not by much i am wondering if my waist size has anything to do with it ( i wear a size 28-30 pants). suggestions on the what the problem may be, or if i am just being a giant wuss would help.

thanks matt.

alright since no one came through with any answers i think i have narrowed the problem down to the neoprene shrinking to an extent and therefore making it tighter.

my question now is has this happened before to you or someone you know and is their a remedy to stretch the neoprene material back out?

You are asking on a day where most of us are paddling so be patient. I assume you are saying its hard to attach to the boat and not hard to get on your body, correct? Get it wet is the answer, then try to stretch it on.

they call it a skirt for a reason... gotta get it wet before you get to play.

Can you ask the original owner of the boat/skirt if he was able to fit it on the boat? It's unlikely but possible that they really don't go together and the skirt could be too small.

However, skirts do tend to shrink when they haven't been used and they're dry. Try getting it wet, have a friend help you put it on, and leave it on for a while.

Also, there is a technique to getting a skirt on. What might seem impossible now may be second nature later. Start by hooking the skirt over the cockpit rim behind you, and far enough up the sides that it will hold there-typically at 8 and 4 o'clock positions, but it varies by boat. Don't try to go too far up the sides or you won't have enough slack to work with to get the front on. To get the front on, you really have to drive forward and hook the skirt over the center of the cockpit rim. Once hooked, you should be able to let go and go back and make sure the sides are over the rim.

Sorry if this was already obvious to you, but I wasn't sure.
