I'd make sure you used some stronger thread if you're going to sew it. Although, with the season winding down and several gear swaps coming up, I think I'd try and sell/trade it for one with the right size tunnel. I would think that the extra seam on the tunnel would be annoying.
I agree with waterboob, I would swap it for someone who has gained some weight. If your are desperate to try it then remove the current stitching carefully and see what kind of stitch they used. I would think that some sort of fabric glue to reinforce it would be the best way to go.

on the other hand greenzorak, have you tried just using a cam strap or some type of easy to adjust belt at the top of the skirt to close up the extra
or rope or shock cord or what ever
