Scout Bars ona NRS Cat Frame...

I've been researching cat frames: everything from madcatr, pre, to recretec, and other local Colorado frame makers-steel and aluminum.

I think I can make a cheaper frame that's just as functional/strong and not unreasonably heavy (maybe not as light or slick as a Ferarri (madcatr)...)

Anyone out there who's built a cat frame (for an ocelot or similar), and fabricated some kind of scout bars for it??????

I'm planning on a small 3 bay frame, idaho rowing style about 68' wide X 72" long, high clearance style.

Please respond w/pics and good ideas-Thanks

scout bars are easy. just run bars lengthwise between drops and weld some diamond plates to the top. be careful with the size of the plates to avoid possible foot traps. i have built three cat frames over the last few years if you want to come out to windsor and check them out sometime i could prob give you some ideas. another option is just let gary at rowframe build you a frame...his price is not much more than you will spend on materials.

Trying to put scout bars on a standard NRS Cat frame with the standard yokes can be a challenge because of the lack of cross bars to attach them to. Because of the lack of cross bars, you get a fair amount of flex from the lower rails, such as when you use an NRS webbing floor. I solved this problem on my Cat set-up by making a small floor for my rower compartment that spans across from lower rail to lower rail. I strap it down as tight as possible and that lends structural support to the frame and gives me a standing/loading platform. This a multi-day rig however, not a day/play frame. If you do a search for "scout bars" you will find lots of ideas and some pictures. It will take a little time to wade through some of the posts, but there's good ideas & pictures in there. The thread titled "More games with frames" is a good starting point. Good luck and let us know what you come up are great. Fiddling with frames is a serious addiction for some of us.

My scout bar is just a cross bar from yoke to yoke. I put an upward bend in it to give me more clearance. To scout put one foot on the cross bar and one on the foot bar. That bar has kept me in the boat many times.
