Roof rack choices?

I only have a little commuter car right now(and my motorcycle), so racks will be needed soon. Besides Thule, which is the only major brand that will fit my vehicle as a semi-permanent installation, are there any decent temporary rack/strap systems you kind folk could suggest?

Confused - why don't you just get the Thule rack now? I've seen Costa Rican taxi drivers just open up the truck on an old compact sedan and just start stacking and tying down boats - where there's a will there's a way. There's always the Hawaii foam noodle pool toy rack method.

Grab the Yakima fit guide, hit eBay/craigslist/used sporting goods stores for a generally compatible rack for your car, then buy new tower feet/pads as needed to fit your specific car.

Thule has a generally universal fit--you just might need to find someone who knows the system to tell you what you need.

I've checked Yakima. They don't make a tower for my car. Thule or foam noodles are my options then. Thanks for the advice!

Maybe I should get a beater '73 Dodge pickup...

We have two temporary rack systems on sale in our shop. One is what you see in the picture (inflatable in the link). The other is a custom closed cell foam rack made by Landis at Wildwasser. They have been a great option for our customers throughout the summer.

Buy either the Thule or Yakima "Artificial Rain Gutters" mounts. I think Yakima calls them the Top Loader Mounts or Side Loader Mounts. You bolt them thru the top of your car and then you can fit the old school rain gutter style racks (Thule or Yakima) that can be found super cheap. You can also fit somewhat never feet/clips to them as well. Super bomber if you install them correctly.
