Rescue Vest

Looking for opinions and data on rescue, vest brand and model, pros and cons. Have considered MTI patriot, Stolquist descent, NRS Rapid so far.

Astral Green Jacket
Only other I've looked at was the Stohlquist, but preferred the Astral for the more generous back coverage and fit.

Rafting or kayaking?

I have the NRS and it's a great vest but the shoulder straps could be a bit better. Great storage and hi float, good fit. Not sure a kayaker would like it though with the high float and longer cut.

He's probably talking kayaking, judging by the profile.

Nago, did you take a SWR course?

The best recommendation you can get for a rescue vest is from a SWR instructor.

Very happy with my Green Jacket for kayaking. The throw rope pocket is my favorite feature. When rowing a raft I occasionally hit my hand on the tow harness buckle or on my knife; both are minor annoyances. I like the pull-over design for kayaking, but for rafting a zipper might be nice.

Try some on to see what fits your body best. Each one has pros and cons. For me I hate having extra "padding" over my chest so the Green Jacket is my fave.

Just went thru this exercise. I have been using the MTI Patriot for the past 6 years and wanted something sleeker for lower easier flows (rafting and rowing).

Padding on the Kokatat Ronin Pro felt too low and Green Jacket too high for me. Stohlquist Descent felt just right. I'm 5'5, 135 lbs FWIW.

I do like the Green jacket and think it would work well if you're taller so the padding spreads out more. Ultimately, you need to try them out and see which fit you like; they will all do their jobs well enough.
