My Scat Packer (as well as the EcoSave) uses a standard toilet seat, there is a gap, and a few flies do get in. We keep the toilet a long distance from the kitchen.
Note the riser under the seat on the Scat Packer on the right (which we call "The Rumble Bucket"). That allows you to fill the bucket close to the top without danger of any body parts dragging in the doodoo (Don't make me draw a picture; just use your imagination!).
The bucket on the left is the Tinkle Bucket for the girls' convenience. We rinse it out in the river every morning when we load the rafts.
