The Player will be fine for you just starting out. The difference between the Player and Sherpa is the blade design, not the size. They are both the most popular mid-sized paddles in their designs. The Player is designed with playboating in mind. Hence, the initial water catch will be fast and powerful, just like playboating strokes which tend to be very fast, powerful and short. The Sherpa is designed with river running in mind. Hence, it tends to have smoother initial catch and provides for a longer power stroke at a slower cadence.
Don't read too much into this though. As a beginner, either of these paddles will allow you to progress to the advanced phase of paddling and beyond. Lots of people playboat with sherpa paddles and lots of people drop waterfalls with the Player. After you've had a few years under your belt, you'll know better what you like and either paddle will be great until then.
I do highly recommend Werner. They will wear down over time (200 days on the water of hard use in my experience), but they don't split in half unlike all but the most expensive AT paddles. I've been paddling with Werner for over 10 years and haven't even considered changing in all these years. You're gonna be happy with any Werner that you get.
