I used all the different types of rudder tape and they all left me with torn skin or blisters. Padded tape fell apart, it changed the thickness of the paddle shaft and changed/ openned my grip making my hands tired and sore. Then I switched to plan old 1/2" electricial tape. I begin by wrapping the shaft twice at the thumb end, then moved down the shaft covering the lowest edge by half the width of the tape, and triple wrap the end past my pinky and pulled tight. I replace once a year and pick colors that will stand out if the paddle ends up in a pile with others or I drop it in the water. The electrical tape works great, it privides texture, doesn't change the feel or indexing of the paddle shaft, and it cheap/ plentiful.
Give it a try. Most likely it won't cost you anything because you already have the tape around your house.
I love to dance, but who needs the music- It throws me off.
