One thing you can do is set the ISO higher to like 800. If you can't hold the camera steady and / or if the subject is moving, it'll utilize a faster shutter speed and help make things be in focus. Also, if you're zoomed in a lot, stuff can get blurry. Wide angle in general is easier to get things in focus.

That focus lag you mentioned is indeed a drag. Like you said, you gotta hold it half way then hit it at the right moment.
