Like the oar should be at a 35-45 degree angle?
If it's feeling weird them something is wrong. Don't overanalyze it, just fix it. You are describing exactly what I experienced when setting up our raft to row with a seat on a cooler. Solution, taller towers, and long oars. Done.

I am a river, babe - I've got plenty of time, I don't know where I'm going, I'm just following the lines..... - "We are water" by Shaye

no rights, just sleeves and NRS locks. I'll check with my buddies to see if anyone has some 8"ers I can borrow and test out.

Oar rights have a much bigger head than a sleeve. With a loose oar lock i can see it occasionally binding up. If you dont like oar rights you might consider a rubber oar stop
Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it "guaranteed", I will. I got spare time.

It really sounds to me like the angle of your oars going through the oarlocks is too great. Angling your towers out will do the same thing as getting taller towers, which is to decrease that angle, and then you won't need longer oars. If you're sitting really high, you might not be able to angle them without hitting the rubber in which case yeah you'll need taller towers.
