NRS cooler mount or drop bag?

I need to reconfigure my fishing rig for overnighters with the family. I'm going to swap out the seat cross bar with a straight cross bar and suspend a cooler in it's place. What works better - the NRS cooler mounts or a drop bag to hold/suspend the cooler?

I assume you mean these:

NRS Frame Cooler Mount

The good thing about the cooler mount is the stability. You will be able to easily walk on the cooler without worrying about twisting the cooler in place. The drop bag will make the cooler unstable.

I like the adjustable NRS cooler mount (as opposed to the fixed mount shown above).

I've seen these used a lot more often on the river than the fixed ones:

I'd say it depends a bit on the cooler. if it fits your boat snuggly, straps work fine (smear some silicone on the strap so the cooler doesn't rotate) but if there is extra room a drop bag is nice because you can stuff the spaces with little items like DOs etc with out worrying about them shifting around. When I use the drop bag for my cooler, I cut a yoga mat to fit the bottom and it helps the rotating issue a lot.

Silicon is a great idea, never thought of that!
I ended up buying Galaxy cooler. It has a 1/2 inch edge all around the cooler by the lid, so the cooler rests on the cross bars and suspended off the floor.

I have used the NRS cooler mount with the fixed length option and did not like it as the aluminum parts would rub the raft bottom on a regular basis - never used the other style. I use the wide cam straps most of the time and they have worked great for me with no problems so far. I also have a drop bag and it is the easy option in my opinion.

strap slide instructions

shows you how to use a strap slide with a standard strap in order to rig your cooler. See if you can find some beefy slides some of the ones I used in the past will deform from the stress.

NRS - Frame Instructions

the silicone caulk idea seems to be a good one for keeping the cooler from sliding along the straps.

Kind of does depend on how things fit, boat, frame, depth. I have the fixed as well and they are rock solid. Didn't sell the adjustables back when I got mine. Do do leave some aluminum marks on my floor but I don't care. I think having the one side a solid piece gives them a little extra.

With a drop bag though you could stick the seat bar back in for day trips and use the bag.
