Nomad 8.1 v 8.5

So looking at the sizes and the volumes and wondering which to go with. I currently paddle a CFS at 75 gallons and weigh in at 165 without gear on.

The 8.1 is a lot less volume than the CFS coming in at 68 gallons versus the 8.5 at 78 gallons, compared to the Jefe at 79 gal.

Anyone out there paddle the bigger Nomad who's not a big guy? I probably won't be doing a lot of self support, but maybe a little, so that's not really an issue. Boating style is mainly Colorado creeks and a little bit of big water every once and a while.

You definitely don't want the small Nomad.
I'm 140 and love my 8.1, but I wouldn't want to be any heavier in it.
I know a guy who's about 155 and he has been rocking it in the Nomad 8.5 this season.
The Nomad's an awesome boat; Go with the big one.

I wouldn't worry about the claimed volumes. You could get away with the smaller one but I second the bigger one. They're plenty nimble so you won't have trouble bossing it around. I used to paddle the 8.5 at 5'9" and #200, I've since lost #25 and have no sense of wanting a smaller boat. I want the volume. I know a former Team D paddler, #155- #160, he's in the bigger one on CO. creeks.

You'll love it compared to the CFS!

I am 6' and 160. I don't consider myself a "big" guy. I moved up from the 8.1 to the 8.5 this year and it made a HUGE difference in my paddling. The additional volume floats me higher in the water, I'm more maneuverable, it is easier to boof, and I punch holes like no other. I love the extra volume.

If you can get a 2010 model, the addition of the ratchet back-band and the more bulbous nose makes a huge difference.
