Well, everyone has their own preferences. The main thing with a boat is just to get one that fits you. I learned in a wavesport mutant and loved it. Creekers are pretty stable and typically easier to roll so good for learning. Just make sure you get a legit brand and not some wal-mart "kayak." Dagger, Wavesport, Jackson, Prijon, LL, etc. Werner paddles are good as well as AT. I like snap dragons for skirts.

I'm 5'7, 140 and paddle a Pyhranna Ammo. Personally I would recommend their boats.

Werner paddles.

Mountainsurf skirts.

WRSI helmets.

Stolquist or Kokotat drytops.

I'd get something used and cheap. Then it's not a big deal to switch once you have some experience and know what you really want.

I agree with zfeldman. Go with used stuff from a major brand and then get nicer stuff after you have learned what is out there and what your preferences are.
