Mamba 8.0 and 8.1

I'm 6' even, long legs, 190#, blue eyes and have a fairly nice personality. I've noticed however I've become cranky lately after about two hours in my Dagger Redline. I've been river running in this cocoon for 10+ years just fine but now in my 40's my tolerance for my legs pinned in this position is waning. I mostly river run on day trips and love to play in the waves and eddies, nothing fancy just surfing.

I've found the Mamba 8.0 a very comfortable boat for me, especially my knees. I have an opportunity to purchase a new one for a good price due to the discontinued model. However the discount is not that important if the new 8.1 is that much better for what I do.

I don't feel the extra volume is advantageous, nor the safety features as I don't run off drops. I do big water at times ie the Colorado and the Green at high flows but the my Redline has done fine there. I primarily run small mountain rivers in western Colorado. The rigging might be nicer but is it $400 nicer? I wonder though about the advertised increased aggressive hull. That has me questioning whether it is worth the additional price for the newest model?

Id think for the price you cant go wrong on the 8.0 if it fits you and you like it go for it the change is minimal at best I wish you luck!

I had the same dilemma as you. I found a great deal on an almost new 7.5 mamba but wondered how different the 7.6 was. I ended up getting the 7.5 but have only paddled it on fairly easy stuff (not enough water yet). So far I like it. I would take the volume thing with a grain of salt. The 7.5 is supposed to be only 57 gals. Well my hubby's playboat is 57 gal and if you put them side by side - there is NO WAY they are the same. It sure is easy to roll though.

Only you can answer the question as to how important the outfitting difference is. Sit in them for 20+ min and see how you feel. Both mamba's will be more forgiving to paddle than the redline but probably not as fun. Those skinny boats are ridiculously easy to roll too so the mamba may feel marginally more difficult but if you have a decent roll it won't be a problem. I'd also look at the remix, zen and funrunner.

Thank you all, I was hoping for those very answers as I had expected the same. It's good to bounce such things off, great forum.

I'm the exact same weight and height as you and paddle the 8.6. I tried the 8.1, and if you're not running the big stuff it's great, but I would recommend going up a size if you run IV's/V's. That extra 10 gallons makes a lot of difference, and the thing is like a tank when it comes to punching through holes and the like. And I agree with you, we have a pretty chill forum here!
