Looking to get into riverboarding, need gear advice

I've been learning to whitewater kayak for a season now (class II and III) and have really been curious about branching out into riverboarding. It looks fun plus I could toss the gear into my car with less hassle than loading the kayak up.

My problem is that I'm really having trouble finding good information about the sport and the gear. Are there any experienced riverboarders on here that would be willing to give some advice to a complete newbie?

My biggest questions are:
  • What features should I look for in a riverboard?
  • What brands are known for quality and which ones should I avoid?
  • Besides helmet, fins, and board, what other essential gear should I get? What optional gear should I consider?
  • Does anyone know of any riverboarding enthusiast websites that they would recommend for additional info.
Thanks, in advance.

Scuba Steve the Dick Dragger seems to have it pretty dialed. Look for his post about draggin dick on black rock on clear creek. Shoot him a PM. Seems like a really nice guy who would be willing to help you out

Good evening halicon! To answer your questions:

I run an RMR and my buddy runs a Kern. Ripboard also makes great boards.

You will need knee/shin guards and a cup. Be prepared to put your body through all kinds of abuse.

Riverboarding is like running wind-sprints while holding your breath. It is very demanding. You are not just floating down the river, hanging on to the board. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Ripboard offers demos. I would take one down to the play-park and see if this is the sport for you.

TEAM FLI :: Face Level sports - Forward motion, headfirst & horizontal to gravity! is a great resource for riverboarding.

If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Scuba Steve is an awesome dude.........gave him a ride a few years back and he talked about boarding, seems pretty interesting. Anyway, he's a charismatic guys and he would be the leading authority on boarding.
