I'm using 3/4" pine with 4 coats of outdoor varathane (goes on easy and clear, water cleanup). Double-rail frame, so supported on 4 sides. I used the same materials for a hatch that shows WAY less signs of wear after 1 multi-day trip than the spar varnish on my old hatch with 2 multi-day trips. I think the varathane will hold up great.
I'm re-using that hatch for a seat board for my oar setup (with a bit of reinforcement to keep it from flexing).
Will post pics when I get around to rigging it all up.
