IR Union Suit Opinions?

I'm thinking of going to a one piece una suit set up for insulation under my dry suit. Then, I can quit stealing my girlfriend's fleece pants (and be warmer and more comfortable!).

Someone recommended the IR Union Suit. Anyone have any opinions? I also saw that NRS and Kokatat make one piece suits. I'm not crazy about the NRS due to zipper placement (wouldn't be able to take a wiz w/o undoing my entire dry suit by the looks of it).

Kokatat or IR. Any other brands that make a thick, warm one of these things? Thoughts? I [more] often [than I mean to, find myself] boat[ing] in blizzards and sub-freezing temps.

You should try one of the caving vendors like Inner Mountain Outfitters. Union suits are very popular in wet caves and caving gear is built to be bomb proof.

IR union suit is the way to go. Just saw me through one of the coldest self-support overnight experiences of my life. They are amazing. Thicker fabric would be warmer but would usually be too much for any sort of portaging. The union suit layers well under everything else.

I've had one for a few years now and love, love, love it. Excellent product. Warm with great freedom of movement.

I have the IR and love it as a base for the warmth and freedom of movement it offers. I absolutely HATE the cold wind blowing snow around my upper body when taking a crap however...still thinking about overcoming this part of the one piece design. I have been tempted to turn the thing into a two piece or add a drop seat into it.

Kokatat, is the way to go, much warmer, and going threw the neck of the ir is just silly, the material on the shoulders does not breath well, and has a tendency to build moisture.

Personally I don't like unionsuits, but I use a 2-piece duofold expedition weight base layer for both skiing and cold-weather kayaking. I believe they are a polyester/polypro/lycra blend but they are heavy and fuzzy and warm + wick moisture extremely well.

GARNA’s mission is to foster stewardship of the resources of the greater Arkansas River region through education, volunteerism and experiences.
