Motion gpx allows you to save maps for when offline. I've only used it once to track how long a mountain bike shuttle was, but seemed easy to save the map at the time.

One of the only apps I have paid for is the usgs "Topo Maps". It is awesome! You can load 7.5min quads of anywhere. Download them when you have service/wifi, then you DON'T need service to view. The gps works great, you can mark waypoints, check location, etc.(lot's of other features) I bought this app specifically for the resason of having a map while using the gps WITHOUT having to have service. I have the 3GS (several years old). Once you buy the app, you can download all the topo's your phone can hold.

Motion x-gps

motionx-gps app on the iphone 4s is surprisingly accurate. I have used to track backcountry ski tours, find hiden bowls while skiing, even once used to navigate around cliff bands while touring, found boat ramps on new rivers and just to let the wife know which mountain I was one this time.

Using bing hybrid maps through the motionx-gps is easy. Just down load as much data as you need and or the phone can handle and you will have a photo much like google earth to navigate by with or with out cell coverage.

Down side is you have to let the phone continually search for cell service, which greatly drains the batterry. So I have used small rechargeable cell phone chargers from Duracell with great luck and finally broke down and got the goal zero guide and now can recharge anything with just a few hours of sun light.

So much for going into the woods to excape. But now the odds are a little better for atleast making it back out.
