If you're drinking beer (ahh, foam) or eating chocolate, meat, anything really, or using that heavily aromatic lipbalm, then blowing into the valve on your pad, the scent clings.
Bears have an incredible sense of smell— they can track a sizzling hotdog from ten miles off. A black bear chomped a hole in my friend's tent right exactly where he keeps his can of Skoal (next to his head) and took the can. Left the head, thanks, but it scared my amigo so much that he quit dipping snoose.
In general, where any critters that gnaw, chew, chomp, etc. might cause trouble, it's good to keep savory smells off your camping gear. A good swipe with alcohol hand sanitiser really helps.
