Starting a new modular frame soon. I think aluminum side rails is a no-brainer due to set screws and u bolts crushing steel. I'll be using 1 1/4 IPS and if I could get away with some cheap home depot fence steel I would...but I don't really want to have to dowel anything. Thoughts anyone?
My boat is 5'4'' wide. Most people use a 48'' to 54'' frame but I would like to use a considerably wider one(66") for several reasons: could use longer oars, could use other 66'' frame parts I already have like crossbars and seats, etc. The frame rails would likely be sitting above the D rings. This is not ideal for lateral stability, but if strapped tightly I would think it might be OK. Could this cause problems?
If I have to go narrow I would try to use the center thwart as the rowing seat, possibly with a crazy creek chair strapped to the(round) thwart top. Wondering how this might work...
Boat is a tributary 9.5 SB
Frame will be a light day frame for class 3 and 4 with no passengers
