Filmmakers! Best lens for kayaking?

I am an aspiring action sports film maker and photographer and I am trying to find out what your favorite lens to film kayaking is. I currently use a Nikon d5200 and have a Nikkor 18x55 lens and a Sigma 50?x300 lens. I also have a zoom doubler but it does't focus well when I use it. Thoughts?

A lens with a really wide aperture is key for shooting in dark canyons. So lower number, you probably knew that. That's the key to it as well as the obvious mm choice. Wide angle is bomb.

To really step up from what you currently have you are either going to want a prime lens, generally because they can stop down wider (wider aperture). You can get tele-zoom and wide angle zooms that stop down to f 2, but you are going to be talking about thousands of $ for a lens. I would consider an extreme wide angle (something around 10mm) and working on techniques. You should be able to create some excellent work with your existing tools.

I have no specific lens feedback, but you might check Darin McQuoid's site for specific lens as he used to use Nikon, has lots of reviews, and is mainly focused on kayaking-specific shooting.

I would think lens choice would be very similar for both stills and video. The one thing you might consider is that if you're going to be doing a lot of handheld filming some sort of lens stabilization is useful, whereas it is generally not for kayaking stills. You can also get away with a lower min shutter speed, generally 2x fps, for video whereas you usually need to get much higher for freezing the action on stills.

Darin McQuoid's Photography Page:

Here's Darin's page if you're having trouble tracking it down:

He's a pretty chill down to earth guy. If you have any questions about anything, shoot him an email. He great about replying and helping out with answering questions about photography.
If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid to get it cut off.
