If you are a solid whitewater paddler you are going to find paddling a touring sea kayak real easy, even in rough open ocean conditions, even in light surf or heavy weather. You will therefore enjoy the most aggressive, progressive, advanced design you can find or afford. That may not hold true for surf play, in which case I would get a surf kayak. It definitely won't hold true for your folks. But for touring and camping by an ex whitewater dude - go big, you won't regret it.
I couldn't agree more.
Check out the VCP Avocet (and others), the entire Nigel Dennis Kayaks line, and the hot ones now are Sterlings Kayaks, especially the Reflection.
The Reflection was co-designed by Reg Lake, who has several first descents under his belt, including the NF Kern. An acquaintance of mine took a Reflection down the Grand Canyon between Christmas and New Years.
