I have had very good luck by just using block Ice.The secret is to buy a $200 freezer, set on coldest setting and freeze a 5 gallon water jug block of Ice 30 days in advance. This was done for a GC trip for the veggie and dairy cooler. 28 days later still had some Ice in them and super cold drinking water. Pre chill your cooler before packing and if you buy store bought cube Ice hard freeze for a week (in your freezer) before packing your cooler. Food you freeze for your trip should be frozen a week at more in advance of packing it. I save at least $50 or more on ice per year and have better quatlity Ice than store bought. I try to never pack veggies or fruit with frozen food, they can get too cold an spoil early. I know all I have said is just common knowlege but I thought I would toss in my 2 cents worth.

ice retention

This year, in addition to the dry ice, we sent our coolers to cold storage at Reddy Ice in Denver. They put them in the blast cooler which way into the negatives, and then stored the coolers with the lid open in their deep freeze at -22 and this Friday they are putting them back in the blast cooler until we pick them up the following Tuesday. We'll then top them off with dry ice and beat a path to Utah.

Look for us on Wednesday the 25th at Swayzey's. We'll be the ones having snowball fights with all the left over ice.
