I have recently come to a conclusion in the pins vs locks debate, and it involves having your oars in a 'double-open' system. Oar locks allow the oar to pop out during a flip or other turbulent situation. Pins and clips disallow the rower to ship/feather the oars and are harder to reengage. The solution; attaching a loop to your oar stand(rope, webbing) and run your oar shaft through with a stopper on the handle end. The advantages: fully feathered oar blades, increased range of motion, no blisters, simpler system=fewer failures, less expensive as you need no mounting hardware, oar will never pop, less breakage with more 'give' in the system, easier to make on-river repairs.
