I tried my five-fingers a few times, but they always seem to get a bunch of crap (rocks, sand, etc.) inside them, which I find annoying. I have a buddy who uses one of the "whole foot-style" barefoot shoes (Merrell) for paddling, and he seems to like them.
I went to work on the Hero today after work, and had another successful round of hacking. My wife actually uses the Hero more than I do, so I had her sit in it when I was done. She didn't like the foam missing, saying it allowed her feet to slide in, which caused her knees to loose contact with the thigh braces. I was able to pop the foam back in easily, and I'm quite sure it won't come out in the event of a swim because A) it's really snug, and B) the bulkhead/footplates block it when she pulls them into the position she needs.
