I haven't decided if I'm a "drainer" or a "non-drainer." The folks I float with are rabid non-drainers, so I usually don't drain. However, I not a big fan of "cooler stew." I used my new 105 Qt Canyon Cooler on the Main Salmon recently and had much better results than my old 94 Qt. Marine Igloo. One thing that really helped was finally finding solid block ice in the SLC valley. Yipeeeeee. Plus I added a few frozen gallon water jugs. Those were sweet for ice cold water towards the end of the trip. I also use a padded cooler cover from SNS, and I use a foam pad inside the cooler. I just added some of the foil backed bubble wrap to my inside cooler pad as well.
Cooler management still needs some work. My trips are usually 7-9 days in length, so the cooler packing and management isn't as "Cooler Nazi" as a Grand Canyon trip. I still have to get into the cooler at mid-day if I'm on lunch patrol. Having the extra room in the 105 qt. cooler has really helped with my cooler packing plan though. Thanks to everyone for their cooler ideas.

I avoid cooler stew by putting everything in seal-a-meal vacuum seal bags.

Drain it, then you don't need to be a cooler nazi. 😄

I'm am an admitted cooler nazi.
If you keep doing what you're doing, but drain the water every day, the ice won't be gone on day 7 or day 8, 9, 10 and beyond.

Just saying.

wadeinthewater has a big freezer that he can put his whole cooler in. Fills up the bottom with water and freezes it in side the cooler which means great solid ice with no air and the cooler is pre-chilled.
