build a drybox?

Anyone here build their own dryboxes?

I used to boat with a guy who had 2 home built boxes. One was made of sheet metal, lined with 3" foam, and help block ice for recharging coolers on long desert trips.

the other was a plywood drybox he used as a seat backrest on top of the ice storage locker.

Anyone build their own? Thinking of giving it a go.

Good luck and go to McMaster-Carr McMaster-Carr for o-rings and latches and stuff. They have all kinds of useful stuff.

Made a few for myself and still weld them for a shop occasionally. It is hard to produce one yourself for less than you can buy one for. If you do go for it try using closed rivets and southco cam latches with the spring loaded hinge

I've seen some how tos using plywood, epoxy, fiberglass, and a lot of work. Frontier play has dry boxes for $200 brand new in lightweight and durable aluminum. The supplies to build the wood version will be in this range, and it will likely be heavier. To me the question isn't of money - it is of time, if you enjoy building things and having homemade projects - go for it, it can be done. And those that are skilled with wood and fiberglass layup can make some beautiful things. But if that isn't you - buy a pre-made one and spend a few extra days on the river.
