CROE I row a 14ft dory 12 water line with oars that are equivalent to my buddies 10 footers with blades. Ultimately it is all about what feels good for you. If you frequently run tight rivers it may be easier with shorter oars. Really it comes down to the longer the oar the more pull you have, disregard the math formulas go by feel. If the oar is to long it can jerk you out of your seat in bigger water so it is a balance of force the you can handle. I would say that an 8.5-9.5 shaft should work fine for you.

oar extenders

Thanks for the input fellas. Anyone have suggestions on getting oar extenders? Would that be a good option to have the shorter oars for smaller rivers and longer oars for longer trips?

Drew- oar extenders add a lot of weight to the end of the oars and as result make them exceptionally heavy, I would encourage you to find the length you want and go with it.

I used extenders on Carlisle oars for a few years. So I'm not a perfectionist by any means. But they add a slight wobble that's irritating when you're pushing against upstream winds.

Wood oars = good oars.
