another helmet question...

So I just "broke" my helmet this weekend, and I didn't actually break it all the way, but I'm wondering if it is still safe. I have one of the Lidds ones that looks like it's backwards, and I took a nice gouge out of the very top, and broke the ratchet/cable part that tightens in the back away from the rest of the helmet. Basically, the cable still holds the helmet snug on my head, but it doesn't keep it from coming up in the back anymore because it's only attached by my ears. The top is missing a good amount of material, but isn't quite to the black part yet, plus it has some pretty amazing grooves on the sides. What do you think- a new one, or just deal with it?

uh... sort of a retarded story- on the upper yough, gap falls, we decided to hit the death eddy, and i made it in the eddy just fine, but there were a few other boaters already in there so there wasn't much room... so i decided to peel out and keep going because i was running people over... and so i peeled out, right in front of a raft, and just got obliterated: cracked my head into the bottom. kind of funny, and purely my fault, but it's really shallow there- i scraped my way down the rest of the slide on my head and shoulder... definitely had an amazing headache and neck ache the rest of the day....
