Altimeter Watches

Hey Folks,
I'm in need of a new watch. Why not get one with some cool features! I'm specifically looking for a device that will track current alt, cumulative alt, total ascent/descent, number of runs, compass. It also must function as a watch....time, date, etc. Wanting to use this primarily as a tool for skiing, hiking, mtn biking.

I've been looking at the Suunto S6, Suunto Observer, and High Gear Alterra. I've heard that Suunto sets the standard. Does anyone have any recommendations or things to avoid.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and didn't get any frostbite out on the slopes this weekend.

Altimeter watches advice

I have a suunto Observer. It works pretty well and looks nice enough to wear on a night out vs some of the watches that look like those wrist radios from 1976. I like the observer cause it is really waterproof. some of the watches say water in handwashing resistant. Make sure to get one that can handle submersion. Sucks to knock out a great day of skiing just to have your watch die in the hot tub afterward.

They track runs fine. Do a good job of it. Try to getone that lets you see cumulative runs or vertical without exiting the log. Some watchs, if you check them at lunch to see how much you have done, start a new log afterward requiring higer level math to see a days total. What would 11,000 in the morning plus 14,000 in the evening be? If you can figure that out you didn't carry enought beer with you.

I hear that the Suuntos are hard to beat but i picked up a Nike Alti/compass on ebay and its pretty sweet. bombproof casing, the lens is inset so it won't scratch, alarms, timers, alti alarms, chrono, altimeter, thermometer, barometer, and the strap stays put with this nifty catch so it never flops around. pretty solid product, especially from a supercorp like Nike.

The only down side in my book is that the metal casing adds some wieght, but it looks sharp. plus i dont know that you can find a light wrist computer.
