I had never considered cutting one flange and hinging a long side. Brilliant.
Take beer to mrkayak. Bolting on hinges and latches and handles is hokey when they could be welded.
Might even be possible to re-use the existing latch. They're pretty bomber.
Add some footman loops (use 3/16" or 1/4" rod) on the sides for additional lashing options or a place to attach a can holder.
