We have a 16' Sotar cat and a 18' Aire Leopard. Both of around '04 vintage. We use the Sotar for shorter one week length trips and the 18' Aire for GC trips or trips where we're bring everything including the kitchen sink. Not an exact comparison, but.....
The Sotar is a great boat, but like any 16' cat you can overload them for certain rivers. Like the first day on the MF in the mid 4' levels. Ask me how I know.
(leave the full 162 Qt cooler at home) For any other trip, it's fine and can carry enough gear. We've done several Main trips with it.
As far as the fabric goes, we've had no problems. FWIW, our friends that run the MF and MS annually have seen some really serious pins with a friend of theirs Sotar raft and were very impressed that the fabric did not tear.
That said, when we've taken both boats out lightly loaded with friends for a one or two night trip, My GF prefers the Aire. She thinks it tracks better. Me? Our first trip down the MF at 2.7 with a more sane load on the boat was a blast. It was just shoot and scoot thru rapids like Powerhouse. On the sticks the whole time. Tons of fun.
