Lake Fork of Gunny -- wood alert
We happened to do the Lake fork at super low flows yesterday. It had four technical drops (class IV) and was low water fun.
Heads up about wood in the last drop at the take out, though.
The last drop has wood above the drop that should alert you to scout, but is easily passable and tempting . However, definitely do not run it without scouting the bottom of the drop. There is a horizontal tree under the water with pungie sticks in the bottom and must be avoided. The tree is likely to stay there all season unless effort is taken from the far side of the river to either try and winch or cut it out. The drop can still be run at these low levels, but must be scouted and make a precise move. Note that the river left to center will be no bueno this season if that tree remains in the lower hole, though.
No risk, no reward. It is not that we have to, it is that we get to. Preparation and education are essential to self-confidence and success. - KV
