Baker's Box, Heads Up

For those planning on heading into baker's box, be aware that there is some added spice this year. First off, the ropes down the granite ramp to the put have been removed, presumably by the land owner, so he knows people are heading in there. Look over your shoulder often, he's probably watching and is certainly armed. Second, a massive rock slide has occurred on river right at the put in, right where you finish roping your boat down the granite ramp, and the bank is now littered with dozens of loose, shitty, bowling ball to car sized boulders crumbling straight into the river above the put in rapid. Luckily, these two factors can be easily avoided by putting in at rockwood, running the panimon gorge (middle box of the animas), portaging the sieve on the left and putting back on river right at the normal put-in. The third and in my opinion most significant change has occurred in the second to last rapid, known as rectilian or tossed salad. The slot against the right wall at the bottom of the rapid is no longer a flushed out sluice box that spits you thorough like a watermelon seed, but a well defined four foot pour-over into a powerful boxed in hole. Below 700 on the tall timbers gauge it's not too big a deal, but with more water the hole could potentially turn beastly. At least if you swim, you're in a turbulent, mostly inescapable box canyon committed to the last significant rapid unless you have a bro brah ready to dangle you a rope from the rim. Be safe, beware, because.

There are obvious solutions to all of these problems.
1. Pack Heat
2. Run the Put-in rapid and Paniman gorge at all water levels.
3. Also run the pothole drop 'cause if you don't you're a wuss.
4. Don't run any of it until Rectilean is flushed out.
5. Wear plaid so that the old man knows you mean business.
6. Go playboating.
