SUP Salida Event this Saturday July 16th

Hi all Colorado SUP Folks.

As we all know the water has been super high is most all drainages in our beautiful state. With that in mind, we are making a few alterations to the Salida SUP Comp this weekend. Teva Presents the Badfish Stand Up Boards SUP Sessions

The free demo on Friday night from 6-8 pm will occur if the river flows in Salida drop to 2500 cfs or lower. Right now, it is just too high and too much of a liability to demo our boards on the river. Please view this link to review the current flows prior to the event. USGS Real-Time Water Data for USGS 07091200 ARKANSAS RIVER NEAR NATHROP, CO You can check our CKS Events Facebook page for daily updates.

The event on Saturday July 16th will go on as planned. Here are a few considerations. If you need to rent a board from CKS, please call them direct at 719 395 8653 x 2. Boards will only be rented to paddlers with in depth and prior experience. You will be required to have a pfd and helmet to participate. We suggest you consider thermal wear, wetsuits, and footwear also. CKS rents these items but you may already have them. Leashes are optional. If you use a leash, it has to have a release mechanism ( releasable system ). Most common set ups are those that attach their leash to a rescue pfd with a QR ( quick release belt ) or a leash that is attached to a waist worn QR belt. You can contact CKS with any additional questions on this style of leash.

The downriver race that starts at 10 am on Saturday may start at the F St. Bridge if the water is 2500 cfs or more. This will shorten up the course a small amount, but will also make it a much safer and more obtainable race for all. Please still come to register at the upper wave adjacent to the Salida Cafe just upstream of the Salida Boat ramp. There will be 2 racing categories in the down river race. 11 feet and under and 11'1" and over. Racers will go at random stating times, based on registration. Racers will be timed individually and will go at 1 minute intervals. Be prepared to start at 10 am sharp. You are responsible for your own shuttles, but we all can carpool and make a group plan at registration. The take out is at Salida East ( approx. 2.5 miles downstream ) and is public venue that does not require a parks pass or permit to enter.

The surf comp will start at 2 pm at the upper Office Wave. This is a fun and low key event and will have surfers in heats of 4 in which each rider gets a minimum of 4 rides and you are judged on technical ability and style. We recommend this event to those that have spend some time surfing in river waves this summer and or in the past. If you are new to river surfing and the water is higher than 2500 cfs the day of the event, we strongly encourage you to be a spectator and and not a participant.

Thanks for your continued interest in this very cool SUP event. It will be fun and we will putting safety as our number one concern. If you have any additional questions, you can e mail chad@coloradokayak.com or earl@coloradokayak.com
