CMC TO OFFER TECH CLASS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
“Intro to InformationTechnology for Small Business” to Focus on Saving Money and Productivity
(Edwards)—While many small businesses are struggling with the economic climate, local small business and information technology expert David Dempsey says that there are opportunities for small business people to save money and boost their revenue with technology. Dempsey, president of Eagle County based consulting firm Managed Data, says that many small business owners and managers just aren’t aware of the technology that is available to help them succeed. Dempsey created the evening course in conjunction with Colorado Mountain College to help those small business people who are looking for ways to streamline their operations learn about the options that are available to them.
The course takes place in October and will be offered as a 5 session series (CMC course code BUS 901 VE60) for $220.00, or students may register for courses individually for $50 each. “I really wanted to educate small business people about technology, how to work with it as a tool, instead of it being a costly burden,” says Dempsey. “I also wanted to focus on the decision making and planning process, bidding out projects, and how to work with outsiders when you need help. Often, it is the decision making process that causes problems, not the technology itself.”
The BUS 901 course series includes the following seminars:
VE55: Intro/Saving Money: Technology can be expensive. What are some ways we can keep costs down and leverage it to help us save money? This class will act as an introduction to some general concepts and terms and explore options that help businesses save money. Discussion topics will cover cloud computing, managed services, phone systems, tech ROI, and more. 10/08/2009
VE56: Minimizing Loss: Technology can help you reduce business risk, but it can also open doors for potential business disasters. This class will focus on how to minimize liability and exposure to loss from information systems. We will explore some real-world cases, and talk about how to plan for and respond to worst case scenarios. Topics will include data backup and disaster recovery, security, regulatory concerns, viruses/malware, users, and more.
VE57: Workforce Productivity: Businesses have cut back on staffing. Now more than ever it is important to get the most out of your people, most businesses’ biggest cost. This discussion will show you ways to get the most out of limited resources. Topics will cover hardware and software life cycles, productivity “black holes”, tech outsourcing, and some special Internet topics.
VE58: Working with Techs: Every business needs someone knowledgeable and dependable to act as the resident techie. In this seminar we will discuss in-house vs. outsourced tech, the different outsourced information technology models, how to work with tech people, how to choose an expert, working with tech vendors, expectations, the costs involved, and more.
VE59: The Ultimate Office: While the other topics are more conceptual, this seminar will look at some situations and how technology could be used to streamline business operations. This will be a more hands-on way for students to apply the other topics to real-world business situations. We will look at actual tech products, vendors, and services, and how small businesses would leverage them to meet their business goals. We will also take some student scenarios and discuss how technology could be leveraged in those examples.
