Amazing opportunity to raft the Grand Canyon!

Join Global Explorers and Grand Canyon Youth for an adventure on the breathtaking Colorado River! This spectacular experience will team blind, visually-impaired and sighted high school students for an unparalleled science, community service, leadership, and cultural journey.

The Colorado River through the Grand Canyon is considered one of the wonders of the world. Participants will spend 14 days experiencing exhilarating whitewater, floating through calm stretches of magnificent canyon and going on rewarding hikes. This program includes an on-river science service-learning component working along side scientists studying the Colorado River Ecosystem.

Student Preparation and Follow-Up:In order to ensure that our trip is safe and successful, we require a good deal of preparation from our students prior to travel. This will include a mandatory weekend retreat in Colorado in the months before to expedition (included in the price of the program). World famous blind climber Erik Weihenmayer, the only blind man to summit Mt. Everest, will join the team at their Colorado training session pre-trip. It will also involve preparatory research and discussions via the internet and phone. These activities help prepare the group mentally, physically, emotionally and intellectually for a life-changing journey. Students are also required to complete a follow-up community service project after their expedition.

Cost: $3950
*We encourage all participants to apply regardless of financial need. Past participants have fundraised 30-100% of their program costs with the help of Global Explorers. Scholarships range from $100 to half tuition, and $300 scholarships are available to all accepted Front Range Colorado applicants.

Travel Dates: July 24 to August 8, 2008

Application Process: Students will be required to participate in a competitive application process that will include essays and references. Application materials are available on-line at Global Explorers. For Braille, large-print, or print hard-copies, please contact meghan@globalexplorers.org or (877) 627-1425 with your address and we will send them to you. Our team will be selected no later than December 1, 2007.

not just 14 days...

We are actually a nonprofit organization, and for this trip we are underwriting the costs of the program. Our students make a year long committment with us to focus on our four core subject areas of service, culture, leadership, and science. Participants in our programs work hard to raise the money that they need to go on the trip because most of their parents are not able to cover the entire cost. See Global Explorers for more information.
