Want to show me the Chama

I'm wondering if anyone is planning to run the Chavez Canyon section of the Chama in the next few weeks. From what I've read it looks like there might be enough water. I've been out of paddling for years, but a trip on the Arkansas this summer prompted me to buy some gear and I'd love to get on the water before next spring. If anyone is paddling class III in New Mexico I'd love to tag along.

You should call Pat at the Taos BLM ranger office (575 751 4731) before you drive up there.

We did a three day trip, taking out yesterday, and what I understand the releases from El Vado resevoir should be stopping any second now. She told me last week that she thought they would go down to 100 cfs last night...but I see this AM it's still at 600 cfs.

If they continue the releases the Day Run (Chavez Canyon to Big Eddy) is a great class II for someone who is still splashy waves but nothing to hectic. totally beautiful this time of year also.

Have been blessed to run Rio Chama several times but always in mid to late May when water levels are usually better suited to rafts.

The lower section and especially the Day Run can be pretty rocky and thin water even in May. My guess is at these lower late season levels the Day Run would involve a lot of dragging. Lots to see and do in the area off the river if not enough flow to float, but I would be sure to get flow information from the BLM office in Taos before driving over.

In any event, Rio Chama is a very beautiful and fun run, especially from the top put in just below the Dam.
