Tips on planning a holiday kayaking trip to Costa Rica?

I just moved to Chicago and have accepted the fact that my boating opportunities will be limited for a while. That said, I have some time off in December and was thinking maybe I could pop down to Costa Ric for a week. I know there are some all-inclusive trips that are available down there, but I think I could save some cash if I knew where to go for rentals, etc., along with some knowledge of some runs. I suppose I could also check my yak as luggage, but I'm unsure about the cost. Also, if anyone else is planning a trip of this sort, please let me know, as I'd be very interested in getting in on one. I would prefer a trip that is class III-IV in terms of level.

Yo tmcdevit, i would reccommend using Turrialba as a basecamp. A nice mountain/agricultural town with easy access to both the Rios Reventazon and Pacuare (class III/IV). While in this zone don't miss the seldom visited and active Volcan Turriable, pay a guide to drive you up then rip down to town on a mtn. bike. Looking to meet other paddlers, then stay at Interamericono (556-0142). The Hotel Wagelia (556-1566) has three destint locations in Turriable, downtown near bus station (the orginal), walking distance to town with pool (my choice) or in the jungle (new and amazing but a longer drive to town and rivers). I reccommend day trips after seeing some of the overnight accomadations along the Rio Paruare, you could get lucky though. Enjoy Pura Vida!

Hey - My husband & I will be in CR from Dec 18 - Jan 1 & plan to spend Dec 24-27 in Turrialba area. He wants to boat too... class III/IV. Will be looking for people to go with. I''ll be hanging/exploring with our daughter. Did you live in CO? We did from 95-02. Perhaps we'll meet up in CR...

Costa Rica Rios is located in Turrialba, Costa Rica. I did a trip with them 3 years ago but do not remember if they rent to private boaters. At the very least it's worth a e-mail.

Hi tmcdevit, I'm here in CR this season working with Costa Rica Rios. We don't rent out boats, but feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about our trips or the area or rivers. Definitely drop by and say hi if you get a chance while you're in Turrialba!!
