The Buzz on Burns

Looking for the Buzz on Burns. Taking newbies rafting with a few in duckies from Rancho Del Rio down to wherever (Catamount, Burns, Pinball, /Dotsero?). These are not boaters but I have experience. Figure the Rodeo Hole will be at about 800-1,000 cfs last week of June. Is there sneak river left or right for terrified newbies? Also, any camp option along the way below State Bridge? Any info. is appreciated.

The Catamount and Pinball take-outs are on BLM public lands. The Burns take-out is on private land, so you will need to get private landowner permission to use that site. The Dotsero take-out is CDOT and is also a public take-out.

As long as you are not a commercial or permitted group, you can camp anywhere on BLM public lands between State Bridge and Dotsero. There are developed campsites (include restrooms, picnic tables, metal fire grates) at Windy Point, Catamount, Pinball, and Lyon's Gulch.

I have not yet floated Rodeo Rapid at this level, so I can not give you any feedback about the rapid as it is right now. Hopefully, another boater can help with that.

Have fun on your trip!

I ran state bridge to below burns last fall about 800 cfs. mostly flat water.... with small ripples and runs until burns. some gradient in the canyon below state bridge and around catamount. If you are concerned scout or portage from the road the hole is visible while you are doing your shuttle. I got my 14' er through it seemed manky and I think I did a right to left move.

Ran Rodeo at medium water and went right to left, easy. The next railroad bridge after rodeo rapid has a pylon river center right to be heads up about. The run is left of the pylon at medium flows, not sure what the line is at low water. Then the next bridges are a railroad bridge and a car road bridge next to each other. I have seen threads on here about people flipping there @ high water. Just be heads up with the newbs. 1000 last week of June would be nice.

If your newbs will be in duckies, they can totally walk around rodeo if they don't feel comfortable running it. The road is right there and it's easy to get out above the rapid, and then back in after. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and stay alert for the bridges below rodeo. As long as you're paying attention, you'll be fine.
