Unfortunately the only place in Nicaragua I've surfed is San Juan del Sur, right across the border from Costa. When it's firing, it's the place to be. When it's not firing, it's still good. Great, laid back atmosphere as that's where a lot of the gringos in Costa go to renew their passport. And you're close to good surf in Northern CR. I've heard great things about further up in Nicaragua, a lot of which is still trying to be held secret. Get the The Surfer's Guide to Costa Rica, the "bible" equivalent of the area.

Utilize the bus system and don't call a Nico a Tico.

Let me know if you find good options for flying to Managua from Denver with surfboards.

Continental has an oversize baggage embargo between DEN and Managua starting on June 4 and lasting all summer, so that's a no go. No surfboards, strict policy.

Frontier allows 110" (width + height + length), which is a single 6'2" board in a form-fitting single board bag with very little padding so you can't even take a step-up board for that big swell that is going to come for sure if you don't have a step up board with you. Frontier says they are strict about the size limit.

Midwest is really Frontier and their policy is vague on the total dimensions of oversize baggage so I assume it is the same as Frontier (width + height + length) which means only a single shortboard 6'2" and under.

Taca is the way to go to Nicaragua with surfboards but they don't fly out of DEN.

I will probably just go with Frontier and take a single short board. I hate being undergunned so I'm sure that is what is going to happen.... a huge swell will arrive the day I show up with my 6'2".

Have fun down there... I've never been before but I'm going this summer with a crew that I met in CR in the good old days.
