Best Surf is on Playa Grande just North of Tamarindo. Plenty of places to rent boards for a couple bucks an hour or like $20 for the day. Rental cars are expensive but I got one last time i was there for about $50 a day which is a really good rate. Buses run throughout the area and are cheap. Don't know much about hostels and expect about $50-100 for a hotel. Prices have seemed to jump about two-fold since my first trip in 08. I was just there this past summer in July. Give Ian a call for details about the area for the surf. I know the further south you go the cheaper it tends to be and as a result of being farther from Tamarindo and Liberia. Have fun.

Playa Tamarindo has a nice mellow break. to the north of Tamarindo try to get to witches rock, ollies point and playa grande, playa grande surf camp(653-1074). to the south hit up playa Avellana and Lola's on da beach. further south is playa Negra. check out the Guacamaya Lodge in Paraiso(658-8431). and nearby playa junquillal.

we hired a fishing boat while we were down there, and they took us with surf boards up to Ollie's point, which is a wave featured in the Endless Summer 2. That was awesome. It was a cool secluded lagoon, with an incredible point break, and no people around. You can't really drive to Ollie's, so that's why there are no crowds. Then we caught a bunch of Tuna on the way back to port. Playa Grande was sweet too, but more of a tourist spot.

Also, if your are open to destinations and just wanting a good surf trip, go to El Salavador. there are more breaks there than you could possibly fit into a trip, and the access to them is much easier than Costa Rica. There is a nice coastline hwy in El Salvador that gets you to all the breaks easily. And much fewer tourists, and less expensive (costa is not very cheap unless you drive into the boonies) . El Salvador is kind of like what costa rica was 15 years ago. Small friendly towns, cheap good food, cheap lodging, and INCREDIBLE surfing. here is a link to the sunzal surf co.

Sounds like we have good group of surfers on the Buzz. Any way we can schedule a fall surf trip to El Savador, Nicaragua, CR or Panama?

Just got back from 2 weeks in east El Salvador Stayed at Las Flores and did the boat trip thing to Punta Manga. Scored major waves Defn, a First class trip, all inclusive, booked through Wavehunters. Would go again and rough it in a tent, now that i know the lay of the land and have meet locals nearby, But Still need to figure out transportation from San Salvador/airport to El Cuco? Got lucky, scored waves, ate like kings, no hassles just surf and Cervesa.

If you book with, they will pick you up in san Salvador at the airport with a vehicle that carries surfboards. They will also rent you a quality board if you don't want to bring one. They'll get you good and/or cheap places to stay, incredible guides, and they know where the surf is prime, always.
