Spring U.S. Kayak Tour

Hey! I'm looking to do a ton of boating between February and June of 2016. I plan on living out of my car/couch surfing/camping. I'll be paddling the big ditch in March and heading to Canada for June/July but otherwise I plan on kayaking until I begin medical school in August. Being from Nebraska I don't have a ton of buddies to go paddle with or places to go nearby.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the best places to paddle in early March/Arpil/May. I'm looking at the southeast (Georgia, Alabama, Carolinas) right now. I would say i'm mostly a class III/IV- paddler for optimal enjoyment, but I could be convinced to do more.

Let me know your input or if you want to join me for a few days. Hope to see ya'll out on the water!

Hi Nebraskakid,
I live in NC. It's hard to say exactly what will be running then, but I'd take a look at the TN plateau (Obed, Daddy's Creek, Clear Creek, Crooked Fork, Big South Fork Cumberland, Emory, etc.). It's a springtime gem of the Southeast (although it's been running lately, too). TVCC (I think) has Creek Week around that time which would be perfect for you to find fellow boaters and trips every day. If it's too dry for the plateau, western NC like around Bryson City is a decent home base where there are multiple options within several hours drive. Our rain is unpredictable and can be geographically isolated, so you have to be willing to chase it a bit. I'd be happy to help you with more info/FB pages.

If you find yourself in the rocky mountains in may, the Arkansas has a ton of good river running and surfing, usually peaks early june, so should be on the rise late may. Snow pack is looking good for salt in AZ, rio grande, Dolores, san Miguel( there are dangerous low head dams in spots), mostly southern CO northern NM are shaping up nice at the moment. P.m. me if I can try to give you any beta out this way( Know some free camping options down by Ark), or if you're running the ark or something I might be convinced to come take a lap!( I'm a rafter)

Have fun on the grand in march!!
