Salt River Trip Drinking water

Would like to use water purification system(Katadyn gravity feed system called "Base Camp") for drinking water on the Upper Salt in early April. Is there any reason not to do this?
Was also wondering about rattle snakes and dogs?

They do call it the salt for a reason.

There's a few perennial streams that aren't bad. Yankee Joe, Coon, Cibeque are the ones that come to mind.

I've never had a problem w/ snakes, but it just depends on the dog I guess.

The Salt is Fickle. Green water to flowing mud over night. Dried up creeks to torrents. Prepare for this. E-

big katadyn filter

On a trip a number of years ago, one of the rafters had the big expedition katadyn filter.

We had one 5 gallon water jug and filled it as needed. Just scooped up a standard water bucket of water from the river and pumped away with the katadyn. Water tasted fine and no one got sick.

If memory correct, an Apache ranger told us it was better to filter from the middle of the Salt than from just any of the side streams as he thought several side streams were tainted with various chemicals etc.

Hey, just got back from the Salt. There are lots of H2o sources down there right now. Cibeque, Canyon Creek, Yankee Joe, Cherry Creek, Coon Creek, Chalk creek to name a few. I also think that water filtered from the river has tasted fine in the past.

As for snakes. They are active right now and they are pretty common. I have my dog vaccinated abainst the typical hemotoxin buzz worms. She did get struck at twice by a big snake up near the cabin at Cherry Creek a week ago. Glad she's a quick one! Last year she was struck at by a 6-8' long Mojave Green on river left just above Medicine Creek. The vaccination does no good against the neurotoxin of the Mojave and she would have been dead meat if she was hit. I would suggest having the dog vaccinated or keep it close by or on a leash. Have a great trip!!

Other Dog Concerns

Keep an eye on your dog for ticks as well as Javelina's, I have heard of dogs getting gored by those stinky bastards.

Have fun the salt is an amazing place.
