They are pretty hard to come by from what I hear. Did you put in for a permit during the lottery?
I am pretty sure that cancellations are only available to those who applied for a permit, but got denied (like me).
I am hoping to do a trip before the permit season starts and/or a mid-week trip during the season if flows are high enough. I run a small cat and can go at low flows.
Last year I got a permit and did the whole run as a 3 day trip in July. We also did a day trip in late April from El Vado to the Monastery. Put in at 8am and took out at 2pm. Reversing the shuttle took forever.
The put in for the day run on the Chama is only 90 minutes from my house so it is our "back yard" run. There is another multi-day un-permitted run in northern NM that is truly my back yard run - White Rock Canyon. It is no where near as scenic as the wilderness section of the Chama, but it has parts that are close. It sees almost not private or commercial use so it is never crowded.
