Pumphouse Down

Iíve got four days to spend between Fort Collins and Telluride next week and want to check out the Poudre, never been. Also looking at Pumphouse down and was wondering what to expect at 3K flows, WWSR says it goes up a notch at these levels, but always heard that was a good beginner run. Same question on Blue below Green Mountain and any other high running IIIís up there. Iím solo, usually intermediate level, and in a duckie.

I got a rider, Iím paddling solo because sometimes its hard getting two paddles, a ducky, and a girlfriend out of the water.

Got an extra seat for my Lynx 1 and we can do floats and some easy white water OK, but she digs running shuttle so we don't do that much. Iíve seen it done pretty well -two paddlers in a single ducky on 3+ rapids Ė but those girls were synchronized. You might want to try it if you canít find a tandem this week-end.

Pumphouse down is easy, you will be fine. Blue below Green Mountain is a serious step up from the Upper C, but still relatively easy. At these flows (1400+) you will encounter a handfull of II-II+ play spots with good eddy service, followed by a solid III rapid and a couple of small dam drops that can trip up the unsuspecting beginner. If you are going to take Highway 50 over you should hit up the Ark, lots of good II/III stretches to choose from (JV to Ruby, Stone Bridge to Salida, Salida to Rincon, Cotopaxi to Parkdale) plus there is a stretch on the Gunnison you would probably like.
No matter where you boat, I hope you have fun
