I also live in Summit County and go to State Bridge via Hwy.9 to Trough Rd. It's shorter, more scenic, and you don't have to deal with the pass. We used to go through Wolcott when we lived in Vail. I actually commute from Summit to Vail everyday for work. When the pass is closed I typically go home through State Bridge, as it is shorter and not as crowded as the Leadville alternate route. Because I have driven this full stretch so many times, I have found that getting to State Bridge from Vail/I70/Wolcott is longer than getting to State Bridge via Hwy.9 to Trough Rd. Save yourself the gas mileage and wear and tear on your car from going over the pass, and go Hwy.9 to Trough Rd. if you're coming from Summit County. Once you pass State Bridge and Trough Rd. ends (the dirt will end here), take a left and head over the bridge. Immediately after coming over the bridge, the turnoff for Windy Point will be on your right.
Just throwing that out there......
