welcome to NM-
There is low water paddling here on the rio grande all year round as well, not exciting, but good to get wet, and decent splats and places to roll and playboat a bit.I know all the halfway deep enough channels and stuff. it will actually be plenty warm until beginning/mid October, then you have to dress for cold weather. you can paddle year round except for occasional freeze overs (hope its a deep snow year, we are due.) the creeking season will be starting up again in march-april if there is one at all, and Arizona melts early too. the Lower Taos box will hopefully run early too, actually i have a couple friends that went out and ELF'ed it recently, and apparently its good to go with one portage, (but its a loong day). i would do that one too if the flow bumps closer to 300cfs.
I like to get up to visit BV - to paddle the Ark as well, since its only 4-5 hours away. its truly a gem, with tons of options (water dependent ) and world class play parks too. I would love to get one more trip up there if the water holds to make it worth it ( i am not put off by low water.... it's low or nothing(i.e go mountain biking or climbing) most of the time around here.) CKS in BV is also my 'local' store for paddling gear...
hit me up if you want to paddle, i havent been out in a bit, but it would be a good excuse. I have a fairly large amount of extra gear, and a second boat, paddle and skirt. and other friends have extra gear too...so we can get you out easily at least the first time. (all my stuff is Xl-XXl tho....)
In santa fe Kokopelli rafting started selling kayaking equipment this season, & in Albuquerque Kelly from NM Whitewater Instruction has rental boats and is a great local resource for meeting ABQ locals, pool sessions etc.
I live up in Santa Fe so i dont really go south to paddle..... although a Rio Grande bosque float For balloon fiesta would be really cool to beat the crowds. I hate the crowds in ABQ. lol.
[Logan I think that would be something you would like, although idk about driving 5 hours for it.... but great photography potential, on the river, with the morning and night 'glow' balloon launches.]
bigscott0ne is another ABQ homie you should hit up. he's aight, likes to paddle sometimes.....
send me a PM if you would like. i dont have a ton of free time, but you never know...
